Leaning against the cold brick wall, one hand in the front pocket of his jeans,James wore a self-satisfied smirk I'd never seen on him before.
I'd certainly never seen it directed at me.
"You're back already?"I look at him,puzzled.
"Elizabeth,"he drawled looking smug as a bug in a persian rug
(more).
"You're just so fucking easy, worthless as scum and twice as hard to get rid of."
I see each ugly word roll out of his beautiful mouth and shatter at my feet, sharp shards piercing through to my heart.
"James?What are you-"
"I mean there's a mercy fuck and there's,"he stops and looks me over from head to toe and finds me lacking."A Mercy Fuck,we both know which one you are."
He took a deep drag on his cigarette as I stood frozen, his words, this wasn't James,he isn't like this-
"Oh come on Lizzie,I know you're stupid but this is pushing it. What's it going to take to penetrate that empty head of yours?Let me say it in words you might understand, leave me the fuck alone!"
He took one last drag of his cigarette and flicked it at my face before turning his back on me and walking away.
"James?"I tried calling after him but nothing came out. Something was off.
I couldn't put my finger on it but there was no way in hell he'd speak to me like this.Even at his worst he couldn't,he wouldn't,not my James.
I replayed the scene in my head,he'd been gone before but he always came back and we always-
It wasn't James.
It was his brother, the same always-in-trouble-brother he'd left town to bail out of another mess.
I tore after him hoping I'd be able to keep my temper in check long enough to find out where James was before I kicked his twin-brother's undead ass.(less)
