Nothing exists that cannot be made to hurt. We are excellent at engineering this hurt in ourselves and in others. We can flay a loved one's words and lay them bare, style the flesh of them into loathing, odium, disgust. And-- perhaps most impressive-- we can lie to ourselves in(more) ways that others never could.
We think of our body as a single organism, but it's not. We're a community amalgamated over time from thousands of different specialized cells, each of which was forced to submit to cooperation as a way forward. But these organisms still possess a modicum of autonomy. They never completely forgot their own motives.
Our affected self tries to go about its business. But our visceral self has its own agenda. To consume. To reproduce. To dredge up thoughts we don't want to think. To force us to act in ways our conscious self would despise.
We've constructed a civil society around ourselves. But we haven't changed. We're adaptable, yes. It's the only reason we've gotten this far. But what happens when we reach the limits of that adaptability? How does our species go forward?
Well fear not, because we have the solution!
The Clearwave (TM) external stimuli re-calibration implant!
Let's face it. Other people are always going to be shitty. That's just science. But the Clearwave can reshape the words, actions, and yes, even memories that might otherwise ruin your day into harmless, mundane stimuli.
Scummy politicians got you down? The Clearwave will re-wire your brain to interpret their verbal diarrhea as harmless glad-handing.
Co-workers talking behind your back? Turn that water-cooler gossip into toothless pleasantries. Now everyone loves you?
Will it make the world a better place? Damned if we know! But look around. Checking out doesn't sound too bad.
